Early Warning Signs of Kidney Cancer

Early Warning Signs of Kidney Cancer

Renal cancer is not a common kind of cancer. The risk increases if you are obese or a smoker. Sometimes it has genetic ties. If so, you should consult a doctor. However, there are certain early warning symptoms of kidney cancer that everyone at risk should watch out for. Those are the following.

  • Hard to locate
Symptoms of skin cancer and breast cancer are easy to locate as they generally present a lump on the body. However, because the kidneys are inside the body, finding symptoms becomes harder as there are hardly any growths. Unfortunately, no screening test is available for kidney cancer. But there are some differences that you can notice, and if you are at high risk, you should go to the doctor.
  • Bloody urine
One very common and often occurring symptom of kidney cancer is blood in the urine. At least 50% of the people with cancer will experience this symptom. Even just a drop will lead to a change in the color of the urine. The consistency of the blood varies and may appear erratically. Sometimes, the person may even have to get a urine test done for clear detection of blood. Other than cancer, kidney infection and stones are also responsible for this symptom. You should immediately see the doctor if this ever happens to you.
  • Lower back pain
This symptom is extremely common in older people and can happen because of disk degeneration. Only about 41% of people experience back pain during renal cancer. Moreover, this symptom appears in quite later stages of cancer. The range of pain can vary from sharp stab to dull pain in the lower back or the flank, which is present between the lower back and behind the ribs. In some cases, people also say that instead of pain, they feel pressure on their lower back.
  • Lump in your abdomen
Sometimes, a person may feel a lump forming in the abdomen back or on the side. This can also indicate kidney cancer. This lump can feel like a thick, bulging bump. Around 45% of people complain of this symptom. However, because of the kidneys’ location deep inside the abdomen, these lumps are hard to detect in the earlier stage. They develop mainly later in the disease. Cancer may keep growing, and you might never feel a lump.
  • Anemia and tiredness
Almost all the people who have kidney cancer complain of fatigue as a symptom. Especially when they start undergoing chemotherapy treatment, those who have cancer say that tiredness is the worst symptom of all. Anemia is rarer as only 21% of people have it. Sometimes it can worsen fatigue.

If you are at high risk and experience these early warning symptoms of kidney cancer, you should consult a doctor immediately.
